High potential and gifted education (HPGE)
Some students learn faster and more easily than others. These students may shine in creativity, thinking, leadership or sport.
At our school, we recognise and nurture these strengths early. We support advanced learners with great lessons and activities to help them grow and thrive.
Our high potential and gifted education opportunities
Our students engage with HPGE education in the classroom, in our school, and across NSW.
In our classroom
At Crestwood High, teachers implement a range of strategies to support high potential and gifted students in the classroom, including differentiated curriculum that offers complexity and depth tailored to students’ abilities. They incorporate higher-order thinking tasks, problem-solving activities, and opportunities for independent and self-directed learning to challenge students intellectually.
Across our school
HPGE students are identified at Crestwood High through a comprehensive assessment process that evaluates multiple domains of potential and abilities, including academic, creative, social, and leadership capacities. Teachers develop and deliver differentiated, evidence-informed learning programs and experiences to extend and challenge these students beyond their current level of mastery. Additionally, the school provides acceleration options, mentorship, and enrichment programs that foster creativity, critical thinking, and advanced skill development aligned with students’ interests and strengths.
Across NSW
The NSW Department of Education is committed to supporting High Potential and Gifted students through tailored programs and resources that nurture their unique abilities and talents. In schools across the state, teachers implement evidence-based strategies and differentiated learning opportunities to challenge and engage gifted learners in the classroom.
What is high potential and gifted education?
High potential and gifted education (HPGE) is how our school supports students with advanced learning needs.
We do this through:
- effective teaching strategies like enrichment, extension and acceleration
- tailored support during lessons that stretch, challenge and inspire
